As I am approaching retirement and considering a big change in the kind of work I want to do, I reached out to Frank. I didn't know what to expect. I walked into my introductory meeting not expecting much in the way of new information, new directions. I was mightily surprised.  It wasn't so much that Frank had all the ideas. But, in his calm way, he listens, really listens. Then he asks questions. I was surprised to hear my answers. New ideas, new perspectives came flowing out of me. They must have already been there, but it took Frank to expertly draw them out of me. I left our session very excited. Plans were developing in my head. I had solid goals and practical strategies to move me forward. I had no idea that so much could come out of one session. I am looking forward with great anticipation to our next meeting.

I was out to dinner with friends who are both in their early 60’s and the discussion turned to retirement – as it often does with this age group. There was a good deal of concern as they juggled thoughts about where to live, how to use their time in a productive and meaningful way and how retirement might change their relationships. These are very prevalent and common concerns and conversations.

Each day ten thousand boomers are reaching 65 and many are retiring. This demographic has been flooded with advertising about financial planning for retirement for years. And, although financial planning maybe already in place retirement is a major life event involving much more than just finances. There are important decisions to be made about how to have a satisfying life and how to best handle all the free time that you have worked hard for and deserve!

Although there are probably initial thoughts that retirement is going to be an endless vacation with lots of free time and perhaps travel to places that you have yearned to see, in most cases there is an early awareness that something is missing. If work has been what has giving your life structure and identity we need to find a replacement. You need to find what will give meaning to your life and move from success to relevance.

Pre-retirement emotional planning is an important part of creating a successful retirement. At Frank Banister Coaching this is an area in which we specialize helping you explore options and find satisfaction in your future reality. Over the following months I will highlight and discuss areas that should be focused on.
